Tom Phat

Comfortably located on multicultural Sydney Road, Tom Phat fuses myriad South-East Asian cuisine styles, including Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian, Malaysian, South Indian and Sri Lankan, with contemporary Australian flair. Alongside classic dishes like nasi goreng and beef rendang, you'll find lesser known favourites like Mandalay lamb meatballs, Szechuan chilli salt squid, green mango kingfish, and chilli caramel pork belly. Even at breakfast time, Tom Phat incorporates traditional recipes into the mix in dishes like the roti omelette with bacon, chives and roasted tomato salsa.

The vibe of the place, like the menu, is an eclectic blend of mod-pop and classic Asian culture with beat-heavy music and reed-thatched ceilings, with cushion-lined couches framing the front window and elegant settings in the long back dining room.

First time Phat
After all the hype I finally managed to make it to Tom Phat. The experience started off perfectly, we had booked and were given a great table towards the back that was a little less noisy.

The service started off well and then went terribly down hill from there. The wait staff feel like they have to fit the "Brunswick Alternative Vibe" which means they can act super cool and not really care about anything. They have a like it or leave kind of attitude that has clearly been a culture set from above.

They tried to clear our plates while we were still eating, in order to hurry us up and then left them there for 30 minutes as a kind of punishment for not letting them do it in the first place. By they time they finally got around to doing it we asked for some desert to be told that it was too late... Upon requesting the wait staff check with the kitchen we received a begrudging yes.

All of this after racking up a bill of more than $250.

The food was excellent, well presented and perfectly executed in a timely manner. I just cant seem to get that bitter taste of poor service out of my mouth.

The Secret's Out - Tom Phat is the Best!
Thanks to meeting up with new friends, we were recently introduced to their favourite restaurant in Melbourne - Tom Phat. And we are now also Tom Phat fans!

We arrived twenty minutes late for our Saturday night booking only to be informed that our table was given away but another table would soon be available. We settled into the front lounge area with our bottle of wine and was genuinely surprised at the number of people leaving their names on the waiting list for a table that night!

Service from our friendly young waitress was efficient for such a busy place but it was the amazing food that arrived which completely 'wowed' us. We realised we had ordered way too much but our waitress was right in saying that "everything on the menu is great - especially the specials on the board!" But the one dish I have been coming back for is their twice-cooked crispy duck with a killer sticky sweet mandarin sauce.

Part of me wants to keep Tom Phat a secret to keep it getting crazy-busy but then I keep thinking what I would have missed if my new friends had not shared their Tom Phat secret with us! Enjoy!!

Disappointmet at the Phat
I have eaten here quite often and enjoyed the food even though the cooking has been inconsistent. Service has been good except our recent experience where our chosen dish from the specials board was missing two named ingredients and the fish was raw. A complaint was made to the waitress but the matter was not addressed. It appears that when you have people cueing up you don't have to maintain the same standards. The owner appeared to be working in the kitchen and I believe he was aware of our complaint. Very disappointing from a regular haunt I suspect it is time to move on.

Decline in service standard
I have been going to Tom Phat for some time now but what on earth is going on with the sevice? Lately I cannot go there without an incident.

I went for breakfast recently and tried to get the waitress' attention for so long I was beginning to think she was purposely ignoring me. Another time for tea the waitress was asked if she would recommend the chilli chicken over another dish and she simply replied "nah". We have had a waitress come to pack up our table and ask if we want dessert minutes after she had taken our mains order and set our table, and it was not a busy evening either, we were one of 3 tables in the whole restaurant having come in early on a weeknight.

I wonder if this appaling decline in service is related to the fact we rarely see the owners in there anymore. It is very sad to see.

Mr Phat's breakfast
I'm giving Tom Phat the innaugral 'best hangover breakfast ever'. Whether you go for a Mr Phat's brekkie or the (drroool) roti omelette this is the one! Sadly sometimes it gets too busy to get in for the breaky. Dinner has never disappointed and the entrees are fantasic. Is it just me or are there less options on the menu these days than there used to be?
