What do you get when one of the country's foremost chefs opens a restaurant with one of its best seafood producers? It may sound like the start of a corny joke but this is exactly the formula that has led to the opening of the latest and greatest restaurant at the Crown Complex, the Atlantic.
Almost a decade after his departure from the restaurant that single-handedly made Donovan Cooke's name in Melbourne the stuff of legends, est est est, Monsieur Cooke is back to delight and enchant another generation of Melbourne diners. His partner in crime in the mammoth Southbank project is none other than Food and Wine Fest Hall of Famer Con Andronis. With this in mind, expect the Atlantic to be nothing short of the pinnacle of seafood dining in this country: a smart, elegant affair with the best catch on offer being prepared by a true master of the craft.

Sensational seafood
This restaurant delivers what it promises when it comes to seafood. We had a range of starters: soft shell crab tempura, confit trout, scallops in shell, and one non seafood dish - pork belly. All were beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. For main we had two different types of fish on bone, both cooked over woodfire grill (steamed and oven roasted also available) while two ordered confit salmon fillet. The whole fish were truly superb. The respectful way they were prepared let the freshness, the quality, and the delicate flavour of the fish shine through. Four different sauces were on offer, but really not needed. While the prices were high, the portions were generous, so it was not bad value overall. Our table was very comfortable, the noise level allowed for conversation, and the dining area, with the impressive open kitchen, was elegant and attractive. A couple disappointments in the expensive wine list and the patchy service (they are pretty new after all), but not enough to deter me from going back. I feel comfortable recommending this restaurant.
