Superfino
With just three tiny tables and a scattering of stools, Superfino brings a little slice of European delicatessen dining to the bustling Flinders cafe scene. Inside, the glass cabinet and wooden shelves display a wealth of raw ingredients, from white truffle oil and gourmet sauces to strings of sausages, garlic and skeins of pasta strung up in the style of a market stall. Books on Italy's slow food movement are lined up on a bench, while rough wooden crates of onions, pumpkins and potatoes decorate the floor, setting a rustic scene for the Mediterranean food. The menu might feature such dishes as haloumi and potato fritters, or spanokopita, along with generously stuffed baguettes. Co-owner and chef Maurice Manno, previously of Aix Creperie and Choix, prepares a variety of signature wraps using his own homemade piadina (Italian flatbread) filled with slices of beef and lamb meatballs, or combinations of braised mushrooms, taleggio cheese and spinach. Two blackboard-painted walls advertise daily specials, where Manno might deviate from his signature style with such dishes as coriander-infused chicken curry. Breakfast offers city workers organic muesli and flaky pastries, washed down with a cool chinotto, a steaming espresso or organic lavender tea.
