Spice Market

Sauntering into Spice Market feels like entering an eastern portal of plush decadence, starting with the horse-shoe-shaped hallway lined by golden statues (dubbed "The Avenue of Guardian Angels"), and moving into the alluring main room that's streakily lit by quirky birdcage light fittings. Then there's the luminous private Belle Epoque Lounge, a padded room that's strikingly similar to Jeannie's bottle from I Dream of Jeannie. It's enough to say that Spice Market is far above your average cocktail bar.

Aside from the exquisite environs, you'll find a mezze menu encompassing flavours from the Middle and Far East, designed by none other than chef Greg Malouf from MoMo Restaurant. These bites include twice-cooked lemon chicken wings and chicory, spicy kofta meatballs with egg and pickled green chilli, and if you're a tad hungrier, a mushroom, mozzarella and zaatar Turkish pizza.

Larry - eat your heart out!
Forgoing the opportunity to watch the Cat show @ the G, i organised to watch the other Cat show @ the Athenaum.
Looking for a quick dinner opotion i thought the Spice market would provide an interesting start to the evening.
We rushed up Beany Lane, tentatively past 3 doormen/bouncers?? & down the stairs to basement market - WOW! what a fit out - it was easy to forget we were in Melbourne.
Without anyone to receive us, we realised being a bar to just occupy which ever space we wanted. We quickly grabbed a table at the bar - where we could then survey the surrounds. It resembled a cross between a Morrocan souk & Jeannies bottle.
We ordered a selection of mezze & the pumpkin pizza to share over a glass of wine. While the food was tasty - it wasnt a standout - although i would return for the arrancini balls.
It was expensive for what we got, but the fitout has to be paid for somehow & visually exploring during our meal was certainly worth something.
We made it to the show on time, stayed in touch with the G via txt (during breaks) & went home feeling as if we got the best result on all counts.
