Solarino

Cloistered among a laneway of boutique fashion outlets in Howey Place, this all-day and late-night cafe and bar is suitably snazzy itself, emanating European elan from its deep and narrow space containing a marble bar, banquettes and wooden tables. Solarino is the brainchild of chefs Grant Phelan and Jade Amenta, whose previous tenures read like a what's what of Melbourne's culinary institutions (the former worked at restaurants like Ca De Vin and Il Solito Posto, and the latter tread the boards at Sicily and Magnolia Bakery). Partnered with Dale Phelan from Caffe Panette, Phelan and Amenta present a Sicilian menu featuring delicacies as squid ink linguini, garlic chilli mussels and pappardelle with white ragu of rabbit, bacon and hazelnut. The specials are also worth keeping an eye out for - though you may be too busy sipping wine or taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi to notice.

great food...
Well, the retro garlic prawns were incredible! The cream had split to a rich butter with lots of fat juicy prawns covered in nutty garlic, served sizzling. We had an antipasto which had scallops in truffle oil, oysters with sweet onions and their own chicken liver pate which was sublime. My friend also had the housemade pork and pear sausages with deep- fried rosemary gnocchi and a gorgonzola salad. I thought the menu was quite a good size with much to choose from and good price. Nice italian reds too, place had a good atmosphere. will be going back, i hear i am one of many now!

Looked forward, but a let down
Maybe just my tastes, but a prawn meal for $33 was over the top, 10 prawns tops. Maybe a bad night, give it a try, but I was surprised by a lack of options. The staff were good and helpful. 50/50 whether I would go again,

superb!
we visited from Brisbane & tried this place twice within a few days of each other as we loved it the 1st time. Once for lunch then dinner. Both times I ordered homemade gnocchi with real parmesan cheese! My partner ordered soup & calamari salad. Free yummy bread is also served. Authentic & all homemade Italian fair. Fully recommend it.
