Sequestered in one of Melbourne's famous laneways, Scugnizzo is snugly ensconced on the west end of Little Bourke Street. Entering the red-brick exteriors, you find yourself in a decidedly European enclave, a narrow, moody room lit by the glow of pie-shaped hanging lights. In both the main dining space and the separate lounge area you see the Italian posters and images that refer to the owner/chef Carmine Carannante's (formerly of Caffe e Cucina) upbringing in southern Italy.
As such, Scugnizzo represents Carannante's nostalgic return to his roots, so the appetisers, snacks and a la carte offerings have a ring of authenticity. You may feel like returning too after trying dishes like beef carparccio, rigatoni, homemade tagliatelle, and the Italian cheese plate, to name a few.
