Sarti

Curiously, this restaurant once shared its floor space with a tailor's workshop (sarti means tailor in Italian). Having undergone a change of ownership and a total refurbishment however, the rolls of fabric have moved out, and an elegant establishment has emerged, with white-clothed tables and a well-crafted menu. There's also a rooftop terrace, which is a great spot for alfresco dining in the centre of the CBD. The menu ranges from familiar classics to light and fresh modern Italian fare, such as spicy prawn-stuffed calamari on couscous, or braised rabbit and pickled artichokes with wholemeal pasta.

chic and secluded
I never would have found this amazing restaurant if the hotel staff hadn't given me directions for Sarti. It is well worth hunting down, as the food is outstanding and made me rethink about the way I discuss Italian food. Sarti proves that Italian cuisine can be sculpted into a fine-dining menu; away from the easy connotation of it being just a comfort-food cuisine.
My wife and I loved Sarti and would love to go back - if we could find it.

Lunch time fare... but maybe eat before you get here.
We ordered the $35 lunch special which includes 2 courses and a glass of average wine. In summary, the food is good although the portion sizes are miniscule. We both ordered the polenta crumbed calamari entree and received 5 very small pieces of well cooked seafood. I ordered the lasagna for mains and luckily received a sizeable portion. Whilst my partner ordered the fish of the day and it was a small fillet with 2 vongole on the side. Lucky he had already eaten so he was sufficiently full by the end of the meal. As for the service, it was good. The waiters were attentive and we never had to ask for our water glasses to be refilled. So overall the food is good but perhaps the price tag for it is too high.

What a great night!
Thank you for an incredible night, all food and drinks were spot on, perfect service, especially from the floor manager on duty (sorry didn't catch your name). All staff seemed to be multi-tasking all night and yet had time for my table whenever it was needed. That was the second time I've eaten there and yet to have found a flaw, it was a pleasure to spend such an important date with my partner in your company.

Smallest pasta meal ever.
Service was good although I could have done without the blow by blow desciption of very menu item.....I was too polite to tell him to shut up.
The ladies had the Canneloni, very nice although the serving size was small. Another guest had the hand cut tagliolini which was also nice but possibly a little undercooked.
All the boys ordered the handmade 'cuscini', filled with veal and ricotta. Hmm.... $31 for 5 pieces of veal filled Ravioli.......yes five pieces for the main course!! I was so shocked I even queried the portion size as the plate hit the table. Oh they say...handmade pasta.........silly me. I think that there would have been more carbs in a slice of sandwich cut bread!

Terrible service
This has been the worst place I have been for a long time. The service is extremely bad, small portions and pricey for what is being served up.

Will not be back !

Sensational Sarti
We (group of 12) dined at Sarti for a farewell drinks and dinner and had a fantastic time. Instead of having an entree dish each we shared small dishes such as the calamari and scallops. For my main meal I had the marinated pork which I believe is on of the chef's signature dishes. It was cooked well, bursting with flavour and melted in your mouth. Dessert was the pistacchio panna cotta with caramelised popcorn, what a combination. Service was attentive, our waiter was efficient and pleasant.

Overall it was a memorable experience, with a combination of delightful food, great atmosphere and excellent service, I believe Sarti is here to stay.

We definitely will come back.

Not up to expectations
Another one of Melbourne's well-known laneway restaraunts. I was really looking forward to trying this one out. The decor is funky and colourful. Beautiful bar and wine list, however less than impressed with the food. Serving sizes were small and so were the flavours. Departed with an empty stomachs and wallet.

A bit of a let down
My wife and I went to Sarti for dinner on a fairly hot and busy night. It's a pretty stylish and funky place with the bar in the middle of the restaurant creating a vibrant atmosphere (though not for those wanting a quiet romantic night out). Unfortunately though the air-con couldn't cope and we were sweating almost as much as the wait staff. This, and the full house, may explain why the serice was not as good as we would expect from a place charging these sort of prices. It wasn't bad, just seviceable.

As for the food it was nice but not as good as we had expected given the favourable reviews this place has been receiving. I had a risotto to start which was quite tasty, then pork belly for main which was a bit disappointing. It was very fatty, and though pork is naturally fatty it was much more so than others I have had lately. My wife also enjoyed her meals but felt they weren't up to the standard of a couple of other Italian places we'd been to recently. We didn't have dessert so can't comment on that.

In summary a nice place with solid food that we felt didn't quite live up to the hype.

Not too shabby
I went here for lunch. The food was tasty and well presented. Go somewhere else for dessert though. $4 for a 2cm diameter choc chip cookie of average taste? C'mon?!
