This place is ace
Some say I might be too excitable, but seriously, I had a wonderful time at Punch Lane. Food was fast and flavourful, no airs or foams, thank the lord! Staff knew what they were talking about and didn't try to oversell, (I know I'm daggy, but I like tap water). They were attentive, and smiled and treated me like an equal not a stupid person, as so many restaurants do. Whomever is in charge here needs a pat on the back, because not only have they been doing this for years, they are still doing it well. Thanks Punch Lane.

Overated...
We were looking forward to coming to Punch Lane bc somehow everybody has 'heard' of it, however we were very disappointed right from the beginning, as it did not live up to its reputation. We were shown to a table by a pleasant lady at the door. As we sat, a waitress approached and asked if we had just seated ourselves..(How rude) We asked for some water, and she did not bother to ask us for sparkling/still, and came back with tap (Lost points in the upselling dep.)She handed us our dinnner menus without the wine list. Took her 30mins before she came back and took our order. I asked her for the wine list, she pointed out 'Wines by the Glass' were already on the menu. I pointed out to her we were after a bottle. The steak was overcooked for a med/rare with a very strong bitter charcoaled flavour with every mouthful. The spatchcock was good tho, juicy and tender, but was sitting on a bed of undercooked pilaf. We also had to ask for our dessert menus once our mains were cleared. After paying for our meals, we left without finishing our wine as we did not feel comfortable or very welcomed in this restaurant. Wine list was good, but would not be visiting again, nor recommending to those who have 'heard' of it.

Unpretentious, delicious food and gorgeous decor
My friend and I had a pre-theatre meal here and we both absolutely adored the place!
We ordered the Spanish plate and the gnocchi to share. The Spanish plate had the juiciest green olives I've ever tasted and delicious manchego cheese with quince paste, among other small nibbles. The gnocchi was the best I've ever had, fresh, simple, flavoursome and not sticky.
Our waiter was superb, attentive, helpful and quick. However, we noticed that several other waitstaff seemed to be hanging around, doing nothing more than chatting to one another, so I can imagine service may be hit-and-miss.
It's a beautiful little wine bar, cosy but not small, with great food (and wine). I will definitely be visiting again.
