Hidden away in one of Melbourne's trademark laneways, this is one of those popular eateries that avid Chinatown foodies seek out. Serving traditional Chinese and Cantonese cuisine, New Kum Den aims to provide something for everyone on its extensive menu, from pork vegetable dumplings to tofu and bean curd clay pots, and deep-fried soft shell crab in salt and pepper. The decor is simple and unobtrusive, with some larger tables catering to the yum cha crowds on Saturdays and Sundays.

I love Yum Cha!
My boyfriend and I get to New Kum Den when ever we can for Yum Cha. It's really cheap, REALLY tasty and you will find all the regular dishes you would expect. We eat a LOT and have always paid under $40 including drinks. The kitchen and staff are efficient and helpful. For no fuss, quality Chinese food, that's at a great price I highly reccomend this one!!

Vegetarian lunch
Today we (5 of us) went to lunch here as we usually do on Thursday lunchtimes for the last 3 years. I had a dinner-menu dish for lunch, namely the Tofu and seasonal vegetables clay pot. This was very tasty indeed, with vermicelli and vegetables and tofu which stayed hot for the whole hour of lunch time.
The prices here are surprisingly low, considering the very high and consistent quality of the food.
As usual, there were a large proportion of chinese people at this Cantonese restaurant. This helps to create the lively chinese atmosphere.
