The exterior of Little Malaysia does not give much away, with a single window offering a glimpse into the simply furnished restaurant. Inside, the decor is clean and unfussy, comfortable and unpretentious. People come here solely for the food, which is as it should be. Those familiar with Malaysian cuisine will be pleased to find old favourites - from a seafood mee goreng to spicy satay sticks. However, the menu also includes a selection of authentic hawker-style dishes such as har mee (prawn soup). The specialties' section of the menu offers some unusual dishes as well as some simple ones done well, such as the ayam temasek or the spicy dry shredded calamari.

Best roti chanai in Melbourne
I have read various opinions about Little Malaysia and was disappointed the first time I went and ordered some noodles that just tasted of tomato sauce. The seafood fried rice my son chose was very nice however, so we did give them another go (mostly as they open on a Monday night when many places don't). Since then I have decided to just stick to the roti chanai as I had heard good things about it and have been very happy with this. We have always found the service to be good and the restaurant itself to be clean and pleasant, much nicer than most of the places that only sell hawker style dishes. I had been looking for a place with good roti chanai, so am quite happy to go to Little Malaysia for this alone as it is excellent and a reasonable price. Everyone we've taken there has enjoyed it apart from my sister that first time who also had the noodles, so I think it may be very different depending on what you choose.

Non-authentic and tasteless
If you're looking for authentic Malaysian food, or even delicious food of any genre, then avoid this place. Although the menu had quite a number of dishes, the number of truly Malaysian ones were quite limited, apart from the standard fare that you can find at any B-grade food court outlet. We ordered 4 separate dishes from the menu and all were very poorly executed and I got the impression that the dishes were made from prepared commercial sauces and other quickmix ingredients. Not authentic at all, and worse, no taste.

Repeat business
This was the third time we have been back to Little Malaysia, based on the quality of the food and friendly service. The menu has plenty of selection and each dish tried so far has been great, (reason enough to return and try the rest).
The Roti Chanai is superb and out to your table in a flash, (perfectly accompanied with peanut sauce as an starter). Food is very fresh and often presented dramatically, arriving flambe at your table. We are yet to try the hawker-style dishes, though the sizzling plates were delicious and cooked perfectly.
Book to secure a table at dinner, though usually the restaurant is not so busy as its local rivals. Enjoy before it becomes so! Looking forward to going back.
