Set just aside from Melbourne's busy Acland street eating strip, Lentil As Anything operates on a collective basis and has no set prices for the vast array of vegan/vegetarian dishes on offer. In true hippie spirit, customers are asked to nominate the price of their order and simply pay what they can afford or feel the food deserves. The fare has an international flavour, with Sri Lankan and Japanese specialty chefs regularly guesting, as well as classic staples such as toasted vegie and tofu burgers. The layout is reminiscent of a communal bohemian hang-out, with rickety painted tables, embroidered cushions and a cluttered courtyard dining area and its casual 'share-house' ambience is reflected in the food.

Not impressed
I went there today and they served me my burger on half a bun, and it was a completely different bun to the ones that everyone else was getting. The burger was falling off it as well. I am heavily pregnant as well, and you don't mess with a pregnant chicks' food! It also took forever and people who came after us got their food before us. Not impressed.

I love Lentil!
I have been to the Abbotsford Convent and St Kilda restaurants, and think that they're great. The food is lovely, super-fresh, tasty, inventive, well-portioned (especially the curry platter), and always a little different to the last time you ordered.
Pay as you feel is an awesome system, and I (and many, many others) give generously to support this fantastic initiative.
The atmosphere is great - I love the mixed bunch that frequent LAA.
Service can be incredibly fast, whether the restaurant is full or empty, and it can be incredibly slow... Don't be in a hurry, savour the fun of being in a parallel universe for a bit.

Hippie flavour
The food can be a bit bland for those not accustomed to vege fair, but is generally ok.
As you'd expect from a hippie restaurant, the service is extremely friendly but unreliable.
The atmosphere is great!
The 'pay what you feel' system is fantastic, I always overpay just because I like the idea of it so much.

Food for life
I have been to Lentil A Anything in St Kilda twice now as a visitor to Melbourne: it's a great find and well worth the wait to get a table there.
Its a tiny restaurant, but there's atmosphere to boot and the food smells great. Its relaxed, easy dining with great vegetarian food. Vegan options are available too.
It is a ethical restaurant as you pay what you feel - a rare thing to see in the world we live in now. I like where they're coming from.
