Laksa Me

Ensconced on the outskirts of Chinatown, Laksa Me is the latest eatery by renowned chef Allen Woo of Ah Mu fame. Fans of Woo's work will be glad to hear Laksa Me features the same unique blend of modern Asian cuisines that saw Ah Mu awarded the gong of best modern Asian restaurant by The Age Good Food Guide from 2001 to 2004.

Laksa Me has a friendly, understated vibe with dark red and eggplant feature walls, fresh flowers, tranquil jazz music and glazed concrete floors painted with Asian characters. The cuisine is an enticing mix of contemporary pan-Asian flavours, showcased in Woo's own creatively designed recipes.

The menu might feature siu mai dumplings with Malaysian crispy tofu; or a vegetarian triangle with wok-tossed shredded daikon, crunchy mung beans and Asian chives, folded and pan-fried in Chinese white pastry. Woo's signature is the tangy oyster shots, featuring Pacific oysters lightly cured in a nutty basil and sesame dressing. Pick the perfect shot chaser from an extensive beer list, packed with Australian and imported Asian varieties.

Will go back
Great smells wafting from the kitchen. Friendly staff. Ordered 'my mums laksa', maybe not enough meat and definitely needs some kind of veg to balance the oiliness. Interesting decor makes a good talking point.

Very satisfied with the food, and the noodles were decent value for money. The placed felt a bit poorly lit, and because we were there quite early for dinner and it was not busy that made it seem a bit gloomy.

This was so disappointing
I went here with my bro and sister expecting a delicious meal from the reviews I had read. We left without eating even a quarter of the food. We all had the mum's laksa which was very spicy, no coconut flavour, the chicken was not stripped - just boiled chunks of meat which tasted just like that... and that was it. Our entrees were also bland and not much to speak about. I have never seen my brother leave any food on his plate (not a fussy eater) but he ate less than i did.

Prices that are a joy
I must admit I am a fan of Alan Wu's cooking and long for the food he cooked at Ah Mu (pitty it had to close. I was meeting a friend who works in the Spring Street end of town for lunch who is vegetarian so I immediately thought of Laksa Me. He had the vegetarian "skinny" laksa. For those of you looking for innovative Asian style dished at great prices give this place a try. It sells beer but no wine (I think you can BYO)
Alan took a bit of a rap about service and decor recently in the Age. I think he has a couple of new front of house staff. They coped with a busy lunch but always made sure my green tea was topped up. The decor is another matter but can you have a $9 lunch served to your table and Nobu decor? Give me value for money food any day - the prices at Laksa Me are a joy.

Busy but not sure why
It was a Friday lunch and the place was busy therefore we were happy when served quite promptly. This was promising as we asked to move tables as they had first placed us next to some heaters which felt like sitting next to the sun. We were then moved near the door where it was quite drafty but we hungry punters wanting a feed. I had read a few reviews of this place and was excited to eat here however I was very disappointed with the food I received. I ordered the Mum's laksa and was lucky to get 4 small pieces of meat. The majority of the bowl was swamped with noodles and the was only a subtle taste of coconut milk.

I was disappointed by the service at Laksa Me. I ordered Laksa Lemak and not only was I not given what was promised on the menu, no one bothered to inform me and gave what resembled a cross of Laksa Lemak and my Mum's Laksa and told me "this is it". I did not want char sui, I did not want hor fan, not did I want pork in my Laksa. I was promised fish balls and boiled egg and vermicelli in the menu but there was none of it. They did not even ask if I mind have the different ingredients. After asking the waitress if it really is Laksa Lemak, she coyly said "yeah, you weren't meant to have char sui" and walked off.
