It's fair to say Shellharbour isn't exactly a rich tapestry when it comes to culinary diversity. It wasn't that many years ago that the full scope of cooking was offering both surf and turf. However, things are slowly changing, as evidenced by the opening of this new Asian fusion diner. For the first time in its history, Shellharbour can say that it has its very own yum cha restaurant.
As you'd expect from a restaurant pioneering a new style of food to the region, there's nothing too outlandish in the fusion dishes - mostly Chinese and Japanese sensibilities that dovetail together nicely. A dish of pan-fried salmon and baby bok choy pushes boundaries a little further with the addition of a European-influenced creamy basil sauce. If you're after some straight-up-and-down yum cha, then head to Jasbelle for a weekend lunch to tuck into pork buns, dumplings, spring rolls and freshly baked egg tarts. It may be your only choice in the region but it's still a good representation of this classic style of eating.

Filled The Void
Shellharbour is a beautiful seaside part of the Illawarra, however the culinary side has been dominated by greasy spoon class restaurants, predominantly "Fish N' Chip" shops, and seriously needed another option. That void been filled by Jasbelle. Having dined at many Yum Cha restaurants around the country the Jasbelle menu is limited. What is produced is of a high quality, in this case "less is more". I also have confidence that as the clientele develops the menu will also. There is nothing on the menu that has not been thoroughly enjoyed by my fellow diners and myself. I have only one gripe, and has nothing to do with the food. The restaurant is hampered by a lack of wheelchair access due to it's upstairs location and no elevator/escalator. The landlord really should be considering how to best address this issue.
