From the minds behind Melbourne's modern Japanese stunner Verge comes a restaurant/pub that aims to inject a little bit more flavour into Melbourne's thriving bar and restaurant scene.
Like all classically Japanese examples of Izakaya (a word that when loosely translated means "pub") the Sapporo and Asahi flow freely, and diners can snack on classic Japanese barbecue items while they chat among friends in this subterranean space.

Gourmet Traveller Feature Review - "Although it channels Tokyo, Izakaya Den – with its local wines, basement setting and superb design – seems quintessentially Melbourne, writes Michael Harden. "

Cool
Just love the music and vibe and buzz in this place. Great drinks but not too impress with the food. Red so much about the fish head or cheek and though it was very fresh but I think the chef forgot to put any seasoning.

Too cramped to eat
Whilst I enjoyed the food, especially the corn fritters with green tea seal salt, the venue is simply too claustrophobic. Three of us clustered around a small wooden box as a table made it extremely awkward to eat and enjoy our meals.

Interesting
Well, not sure what to think, even a week later, great drinks menu, food wasn't typical, but experimental. So go with an open mind. Can't book, which is a bit of a pain because it is always busy.

Bamboozled!
Izakaya Den offers a wonderful dining experience! It is ridiculous difficult to find and I'm not going to divulge instructions here because the bamboozled way in which you located this restaurant is definitely part of the experience. A vibrant and sleek atmosphere which is perfect of after-work drinks or a casual catch-up. We dined at Izakaya Den for a pre-theater dinner option and were not disappointed. The nature of Japanese food and the prompt service meant that we were out on time, full and watered too!
The Japanese food is really tasty. I am not an expert on this cuisine but I understand and appreciate fresh seafood, beautiful condiments and interesting flavors. Izakaya Den offered dishes that was true to the above. (The one exception is the lamb cutlets...steer well away!!)
The drinks add a whole new dimension and the Umeshu on the rocks is a must!!
I will definitely be returning to Isakaya Den to stay a lot longer and continue to work through the cocktail list, a really cool and fun night out!

Fantastic
A bit hard to find, even if you have the address. We needed to call ahead and have them direct us to the restaurant, more or less!
We were delighted to find that that it wasn't simply the "same old" traditional Izakaya dishes available everywhere, but plenty of fun and innovative dishes, and interesting ingredients. Kingfish sashimi with "Asian style dressing" was magnificent. Close your eyes and savour the moment delicious. Deep fried sweet corn with green tea salt was lovely, cheap, crunchy & sweet. A special of chicken ribs was fine, but no where near the standard of some of the other dishes. Lots & lots of alcohol available: beer, shochu, sake, cocktails, and more. Staff were polite. One very minor quibble was that one of the dishes my partner and I ordered to split came in three pieces, which we were not made aware of at the time of ordering. Also sitting at the bar across from the grill was a tad warm for a summer night. Decor had a cool underground "industrial" vibe, and seats were comfortable. The bill was quite reasonable. We'll definitely be back, I must try the spicy tuna tataki with garlic soy next time, which seemed very popular, jumbo quail with sansho pepper and garlic chives, and perhaps one of the deserts which looked interesting.

good looking but...
Beautiful setting, really good atmosphere as soon as you step into the place. was greeted warmly by staff, and set with a cold hand towel to start. Had high hopes as it looked and felt so impressive. Ordered about 6 dishes. Ordered the special chargrilled dory fillet, but it came out overcooked and not very nice. had the eel wrapped in bamboo leaf, which was amazing. also had the sweet corn cakes with wasabi salt (ok), the daikon salad with wagyu, Kingfish sashimi. I wouldn't order any of those dishes except for the eel. The rest of the food was presented well to the eye but was bland to the palate. would go again for drinks but the food wasn't kicking goals for me...
