Il Tempo

Everyone knows about the Little Italy enclave of Lygon Street, but if you're stuck in the CBD and craving casual Italian food, Il Tempo is often touted as the numero uno destination. Hidden away behind Flinders Lane, the eatery occupies a dimly lit bistro-style space with flowerboxes on its windowsills and a quaint European atmosphere. Tables edge out over bustling Degraves Street, luring curious passersby during the busy lunch hour.

The menu is a celebration of the pleasures of eating, with the simple and homely meals ranging from seasonal soups to homemade gnocchi, lasagne, gourmet open burgers and T-Bone steaks. Il Tempo is most famed for its delicious range of specialty bruschetta, stuffed with meat, seafood and vegetable concoctions. Try the crudo, packed with prosciutto and brie cheese; or a pizza-style pepperoni bruschetta, which spills grilled capsicums, tomato, mozzarella and olive oil from a base of fresh crusty bread.

Good for Kids
I had lunch at "il Tempo" "accidentally" after one of the staff kindly allowed one of my kids the use of the rest room, we ended up staying for a quick bite and our waitress was very kind making sure my kids didn't get bored while waiting, bringing us at the table some kids books to colour. We shared 2 portions of spaghetti meatballs that were delicious! and we received a complimentary taste of their new chocolate log-salami with our coffes. The staff is really friendly and I would recommend this place for families with kids as they have space for prams and they can arrange options also for childern

Pity about the meal
After attending an engagement party at Il Tempo and having wonderful food a couple of years ago we decided to go back to celebrate my sister's birthday. The venue itself is good, situated on lively Degraves St it has a busy, but relaxed atmosphere. Unfortunately the meal did not live up to expectations. Firstly a number of beers and wines were not available, our entree of bruschetta was lovely, but the main meal selection was disappointing and the meal quality was no better than a cheap pasta house. To top it off when it came to dessert, at 8pm on a Saturday night, they had no Tiramisu and only one chocolate pudding available - needless to say we headed off and had Gelato at Southbank! The staff were great but it couldn't make up for the less than inspiring meal.

Cool surprise
A friend of mine suggested to try this place for anytime I come to Melbourne (well apart from his fauvorite Movida and the European). Well I guess, no comparison, but in its own little way I was quite surpised by this little "gem" in that funky lane of Degraves Street.
Relaxed and rustic atmosphere, lucky if u get served by the owner, nice "milanista" chap, excellent braised cheeks.

Simply the best
My partner and I stumbled upon Il Tempo during a holiday to Melbourne in September, 2006. From that time until now, every time we come to Melbourne, we make a point of eating at Il Tempo. Great atmosphere, relaxed and efficient service, superb food; a truly cosmopolitan, stylish place to unwind, to relax and to enjoy the good things in life. We have our favourites in other places - New York, London, Brisbane, etc. Il Tempo has that designation when we're in Melbourne. If you're in Melbourne and want a memorable, value-for-money experience, give Il Tempo a go. You'll be glad that you did. Buon apetito!
