Hu Tong - Hooray!
Not having had a chance to read Gourmet Traveller's 2011 restaurant guide yet, I knew as soon as I walked in to HuTong that it surely must have made mention... I was right... "If it is dumplings they want, the hoards will flock to HuTong." Making our way up the laneway we were ushered inside from the cold, upstairs, through the mezzanine level, and right up to the third level where our table for six was waiting not a minute late. A lovely touch is that each table can be sectioned off with heavy wooden venetians if you so request, and this dark, comfortable feel together with the red lanterns hanging from the high ceiling give it a real modern-but-traditional feel. Despite having read other reader reviews of poor service, our waitress was polite and attentive throughout. Having said that, it is not the service that will draw me back here... the food, traditional Cantonese and Chinese fare, is absolutely outstanding. The ingredients are fresh, and the flavours, while certainly packing a punch, aren't too overpowering. The steamed house specialty dumplings, shaped like money bags only bigger (which should please any dumpling lover) have the regular pork -and-shredded-cabbage situation inside, but are swimming in a little soup-like juice. So, biting into the dumpling is like a little explosion of excellence in your mouth! The servings of calamari, prawns, chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, other vegetable dishes, spinach dumplings etc. were all of very generous proportions. The scallop & vegetable dish in particular was outstanding, zingy, and the scallops cooked to perfection - and there were about 30 of them in the one dish! I will absolutely be recommending this restaurant to anyone who wants fabulous Chinese at very reasonable prices!

Wonderful Food, below par service
There were 3 of us for dinner that night. The food was wonderful and we made sure to book as they are very busy. The signature dumplings were wonderful. The service needed more improvement as the Entree and Mains all came at the same time even though we had specified for a gap between them.
Overall I would definitely go back again.

Finally!
Word going around was that the staff at Hu Tong were notoriously rude. This didn't sway me from my relentless pursuit of a quality dumpling in Melbourne. The dumpling climate had gotten so dismal in this town I had resorted to making my own under instruction from my Chinese friend. Thankyou Hu Tong. Your staff are terse yes, but your dumpling love delivers in spades and I thank you from the bottom of my heart (and tummy) for filling the dumpling void. We ordered every dumpling on the menu and the dish that is a big bowl of chilli fish. As my friend and I basked in the glory of long awaited dumpling joy we tell each other the wait staff can be as rude to us as they want.

Great dumpling house
Overall really good. Ordered chilli wantons, steamed pork dumplings, Long Shao Bao. All the dumplings were great quality. Also ordered the spicy squid (not spicy at all and a little overcooked), dry chilli chicken (was ok, but not my favourite), vege fried rice (decent). all about the dumplings! The service was very courteous, efficient and nice. Looking forward to going back

dumpling heaven
I have been here many times now, returning for the shao long bao which are outstanding.
attemtping to try other dishes too, but havent come across anything too impressive; the eggplant and scallop hotpot was pleassant, but i would only order it again when in a large group. The peking noodles were nothing special.
Decor is very nice and some of the waitstaff are friendly, with the others not as acknowledging... something you would expect at a cheaper chinese restaurant perhaps.
will be tempted back by thsoe cumpligns soon if I can get back in. We tried to book for a tuesday lunch and it was full !
