As casual as the name suggests, Horoki still provides a unique and funky space in which to dine. Large disc-shaped lights hang like bloated cheeses above diners at the mismatched tables, while fuchsia stools provide more seating by the studded bar-front. The menu is similarly eclectic, with Japanese flavours predominating, but sometimes oddly teaming with both Mediterranean and Chinese tastes. The dishes might include tuna carpaccio with soy and parmesan cheese, Chinese-style pipis in barbecue sauce or roasted duck with a miso and honey sauce. Regular specials provide even more inventive combinations.

Overpriced
Meal portions so small its a joke.
Delicious, but too expensive for what you get.
Not worth it

Horror-ki today
Two months ago lunch here was fantastic but today's gluggy hamburger tasted like something that came out of a can at school camp. Waited over half an hour to get served limp salad, dry shioyaki fish and hard, black chicken. Even the rice was soggy. All in all, the meal was as Japanese as Kath and Kim. And of course, there were no Japanese customer's in sight, just office workers aiming to be seen. Hope things get better again. It used to be sooooo good when the chef bothered to make an effort!

Very enjoyable
Fell over Horoki by chance as I was staying around the corner. I arrived close to 6.30 without a booking and the restaurant was busy. I was seated at the bar and offered the menu. The menu was diverse and offered a wide range of dishes that sounded very appealing. Initially I ordered the (if I remember correctly) swordfish (tataki style) and the scallops (for the life of me I do not remember the name of this dish). I ordered a small bottle of sake to accompany my meal. The swordfish was good, the scallops were divine (how I wish I could remember the name of the scallops). After eating these dishes, and wanting to try a little more, I ordered a tuna carpaccio dish. This was very interesting. The tuna had a splash of soy (with mirin??) and parmesan cheese. A very odd combination, but it worked very well. Overall, the meal was very enjoyable. Light, refreshing and easy on the pocket.

I love this place!
The food is quirky yet brilliant, and the staff are adorable. I've eaten here many times and I've never left disappointed. Horoki is a true Melbourne gem.
