Hofbrauhaus

Fancy some great traditional Bavarian food? From herring to strudel it's at Hofbrauhaus and it's rib-stickingly good. Scoff your enormous schnitzel with a Hofbrauhaus beer at this traditional German restaurant. Bring your appetite because the servings are large. The menu includes a range of wurstl (sausages), though the veal schnitzel with house-made spatzle (noodles) is pretty hard to beat.

Sunday dinner at the Hofbrauhaus
Good German or Austrian fare is hard to find in Melbourne, so the Hofbrauhaus is one of few choices.
Having been there with a party of friends last New Years Eve and enjoying a great night, we thought we try it on our own again on a Sunday night as a family of three. We did not expect it to be busy (who goes to a restaurant on a Sunday night) and it wasn't. About 15 patrons between 5.30 and 6.30.
I have no problems with large portions, so the giant schnitzel was my choice. Big, but not a problem if you can eat and prepare yourself all day for a big evening meal. If you don't, there is a choice. My wife had the normal version of this dish, which is cheaper.
The schnitzel was well prepared and tasted great. I wasn't too wrapped in the mashed potatoes that went with it on the night, (in Austria, a rosti is the more likely accompaniment to go with this dish), but not so much because the mash did not taste good; rather on the basis that I would have liked a rosti.
The daughter went for the chicken schnitzel, and she loved it too.
Another dish that I might recommend is the pork knuckle. Friends had that previously, and thought it was great. Next time I go back, I'll try that one.
Service was efficient and friendly, and the atmosphere somewhat old world and pleasantly subdued, as would be expected on a Sunday night. (Can be a fair bit more raucous on a Saturday evening or on special occasions, as we did experience last New Years Eve.) Discreet backgroud music allowed a conversation over dinner, and even when the two piece band started their thing around 6pm, they did not drown us out. Thank you.
If you like (or like to try) German-Austrian food, we do not know of a better restaurant in Melbourne that you could visit. (Except maybe for a certain place in the Dandenongs; a bit far to travel if you live out west, as we do.)

Dinner at Hofbrauhaus
Food service was very fast and drink were reasonable value (1/2 litre glasses $10!), but drink service was somewhat slow. It was a good idea to make people pay for their drinks as they order them, as group bills are a nightmare for both punters and staff.

Some portions were huge (smoked pork, schnitzel) and subsequently went uneaten (just too much), and not much effort put into flavours of sauces and accompaniments unfortunately. We were surprised to have the apple strudel served cold, though it was heated up with not much trouble and re-presented.

The atmosphere was predictably raucous and fun, with plenty of live music and dancing.

Great place for group parties, though the menu needs to be refreshed and food could be better value for money.
