Heirloom

There's a stigma attached to fusion foods that, for the most part, is deserved. East meets West ends up being either cluttered confusion on the plate or just plain naff. But for every couple of hybrid abominations there is a Tetsuya's creating beautiful and harmonious flavours. Heirloom seems to be one of the latter.

Bourke Street's latest offering is a collaboration between Shigeo Nonaka (of Shoya across the way in Market Lane) and Kyle Doody (he of Gills Diner fame) and the boys' wealth of experience is immediately evident. Up front you get a modern bistro, complete with cavernous, industrial-chic motif and corporate-attired clientele, while out back is a refined and wholly Japanese sake bar.

It would be easy to assume that each chef reigns over his respective kitchen and never the twain should meet, but this isn't the case. Bistro-side you're just as likely to find confit duck or rabbit terrine as you are Drunken Tofu. Luckily, common sense has also won out over egalitarianism and the French elements are blessedly absent from the traditional sake bar. Head out back for high end sushi, yakitori and an eclectic range of sake.

Great value
We went for the mother's day 5 course menu for $55 each which was great value. The highlight for me was the mushroom quinoa medley whilst hubby loved the roast beef tenderloin. The service was good and the decor lovely.

what a find!
Literally stumbled across this restaurant with a friend while wandering Bourke / Little Bourke area and after reading enticing menu, thought we'd give it a go. It was a good decision. Attractive, edgy, yet comfortable environment, fantastic menu, and great service. Was not that busy - apparently they have only been open a couple months, but I imagine when word gets out, this place will fill up. Menu is French-Japanese apparently, but they do have traditional sushi and sashimi which is absolutely first rate. On top of this I can recommend the miso grilled quail, duck gyoza with orange sauce, and slow cooked pork belly. Also enjoyed the beautiful and quirky dessert - burnt butter ice cream with caramel popcorn. The actual dish has to be seen to be believed (can see on website). Will definitely go back and recommend it wholeheartedly.
