The north shore's dining revolution may have begun in Neutral Bay with such venues as Pony, Neutral Bay Bar & Dining and Firefly, but as first venture off the blocks Mosman could do a whole lot worse than Hawthorn.
Opened early in 2011, Hawthorn may still need a slight introduction for some people. Its pedigree, however, needs no such fanfare. Hawthorn is a collaboration between Sean Byrne, long-time GM of Palm Beach dining darling Jonah's, and the former head chef at Bill Granger's eponymous Woollahra cafe, Marco Salvador.
With these two experienced heads at the helm expect the front-of-house service and food to be nothing short of impeccable. The only thing left to worry about is the vibe of the place, and a stylish fit-out courtesy of Coco Republic has artfully converted this heritage-listed cottage with a mix of sensitivity and style.
The courtyard is where you want to be for mid-morning coffee breaks or sun-drenched luncheons, but right in the centre of the building is the place to be come sundown. The bar, as it should be, is at the epicentre of this venue and sports the tasteful decor of a prohibition-era speakeasy, replete with tiled walls, chesterfield chairs and a single moody fan spinning slowly over head. Here's lookin' at you, kid.
