Gingerboy

Having risen to culinary fame on the back of his namesake restaurant Ezard, uber-chef Teage Ezard has expanded his stable to include another laneway treasure. Gingerboy allows Ezard to indulge shamelessly in his passion for the Orient, specifically South-East Asian street food. The style is that of a hawker market, only far more chic, of course. Transparent Kartell chairs are set in a funky bamboo-lined space, lent a vaguely disco feel with fairy lights, bronze mirrors and red fringed lampshades.

The menu takes traditional hawker market food to a stylish Melbourne-esque level, with Ezard putting his distinctive stamp on South-East Asian street favourites. The dishes are divided into smaller and larger sizes, which can be shared in an Asian tapas style. The mouth-watering options might range from son-in-law eggs with chilli jam; to stir-fried stingray in a dry green curry. Aside from the usual liquid accompaniments, Gingerboy also boasts a sensational-looking cocktail list of Asian-inspired concoctions.

Great food v Lapse in service
Enticed by the street food and share angle from Teage Ezard, it did not disappoint particularly the swordfish which was a standout.
Although some patrons might find the thumping, quite loud music a little confronting I thought it worked well in the bustling space particularly as we were there on a Saturday to celebrate a birthday.
The only sour point was the service or lack of it... we seemed to be forgotten in the corner having to actually get up for an additional drinks order.
With a little more attention to detail this will become a laneway institution.

Enjoyable experience
The service was efficient and helpful. The food had some interesting flavours and was tasty although the prawn dumplings a bit too salty. Decor was interesting. I don't know what older diners would think of the disco look. The chairs were quite uncomfortable and narrow and the temperature a bit too chilly. Atmosphere good although a bit noisy once the room fills up. I agree that the tables were too close together. You have to squeeze and bump into people to get through. The entree sizes are quite small and you end up having to order quite a few dishes to get a decent feed. But the food had some interesting flavours and overall, I didn't mind paying out for an enjoyable experience. Surprising since I didn't like Ezard's at all and was initially a bit hesitant about coming to Gingerboy. I would come again.

Loved It!!
Love at first site. The decor in Gingerboy is great. Gives a great fist impression. The foods are ordered to share and full of flavour. Not huge meals but they made up for it with taste. Will definitely go back and I'd say it will become one of our regulars!

Don't bother if you want to eat...
Went to lunch there today and thought the experience was a disaster. At the beginning the waitress warned us that food was hawker-style and arrives very quickly. She added that we could let them know to slow down the service if required. We were also told the food was intended to share. This is important as I'll get to this below...

I know hawker food very well as I've travelled extensively through Malaysia and Singapore. Hawker food means strong, clean flavours that arrives quick and hot. And you don't hang around to chat once you've finished. In and out in 1/2 hour - tops.

So I guess we weren't surprised when the entree arrived after 2-3 minutes but the mains didn't arrive for a further 45-50 minutes... Because it was during a work day, we wolfed down the main so we could get back to work. The serve of rice was the most paltry amount I've ever seen at an Asian restaurant - anywhere. If you've ever seen asian teacups, it was basically that size, to share!

My wife and I always return to restaurants to give them a second chance if the experience is crap. After the second chance, we'll "ban" them permanently and spread the word. In this case, we gave a unanimous "Banned!" first time around.

Fun night out
After a couple of great cocktails at Longrain in Little Bourke Street we went to Ginger Boy for Dinner, and it is just the right ambience after a couple of drinks. Ordered excellent battered flathead and duck curry. The entrees are tiny - one scallop - and the mains are pretty small too, but the food was fresh and great and the service was excellent. The pinot noir house wine is perfect with the food. It's cramped but I personally think that delivers the Asian atmosphere.

Yum
What a great place. The first thing that struck me about Gingerboy was the decor, very trendy. The black bamboo on the walls looks great, and I was even more pleased to see the sound-deadening material behind, as it made it possible to have a conversation with your dinner partners. I had a cocktail to start with, which is a nice option, quite progressive (not to mention a good earner). The meal was fantastic. In the last couple of months I have also had dinner at the Botanical and Comme, but Gingerboy was a standout. I had the son-in-law eggs and the pork (cheek?) and mango salad. The pork was melt in the mouth, with a caramel crust that complemented it perfectly. Just the right heat for my palate. The eggs are an experience but a little challenging to eat without a mess. For dessert I shared a mixed plate; it was good, plenty of interesting things, but I couldn't pick a standout. The only detraction was that I felt we were sitting just a few of inches too close to other patrons.

Some good food but inconsistent
We dined here for the first time on a Monday night. All in all the food was fairly good - some exceptional dishes but others were just ok to good. All in all, though, what we will remember was the less than helpful service.
We asked for and received assurances we hadn't over-ordered but we had. The seafood dishes all came out together, they were way too salty and left us very full before the really great pork and duck dishes came out - we were then too full to enjoy.
Finally a rude response to a request for soy milk coffee (yes, I know, but she could have been nicer) and a highly doubtful story about not giving us our left overs in take away containers for "OH&S" reasons - does it really put the safety of the Gingerboy workers in jeapordy to give us the huge amounts of food that we weren't able to finish, but had ordered on her assurance? Won't be returning.

Worth a try
I had an early dinner there, and I thought the atmosphere was very nice, and the service attentive. However, by the time the peak dining hour arrived, we ended up crammed in like sardines, and yes, my seat was bumped a few times too. The closeness of other diners also meant that there were many different types of aromas mixing together, and it detracted a little from my food (dessert doesn't taste so good when it smells like the fish of your left-hand neighbours or the pork of your right-hand ones).

Also, the restaurant was filled with smoke from the kitchen, and my clothes smelled oily after I left. This place needs to improve it's ventilation.

The food itself was good and interesting. Don't expect authenticity though, as these dishes are more hawker-inspired original creations than faithful reproductions of what you would find in SE Asia. A couple of the dishes (especially the pork nam prik ong) were too salty (maybe to encourage you to buy more drinks), but overall of good quality.

Price? Too expensive for what it was.

Overall, you should try this place once. Just try to go there when it's not too busy, and and if possible make sure your boss is paying.

What a gem! Teage Ezard has really done it again. Amazing foods (to share), as well as knowledgeable and friendly staff. Well done.

Teething problems
Tables too close together and too small for style of cuisine, while the restaurant is nicely designed, our guest was continually bumped by no less than three waiting staff.

Felt more like a rave party than a restaurant with all the loud, doof-doof music thumping out.

Food was OK, though lacked dimension and creativity, and quite expensive.
The four of us left disappointed.

Staff too pushy to upsell beverages.

Disappointing given the standard Teage Ezard has set at Ezards.
