Grant King made his name as one half of the Pier dynasty in its triple-toqued heyday. Now with the opening of his first solo venture, we see one of the country's most talented chefs letting his imagination run wild.
Gastro parK, as the name implies, is a culinary playground in every sense. Juxtaposing against the austere slate greys of the dining room, unclothed black tables and dark-stained Thonet chairs, the food here is, in a word, vibrant.
The first impression one gets from King's menu is of a chef spreading his culinary wings. Everything on his constantly fluctuating menu is wholly modern but manages to employ new techniques without falling into the gimmickry of 'molecular gastronomy'. In this way, King follows a similar vein to such Sydney heavyweights as Brent Savage at Surry Hills stalwart the Bentley: modernist techniques are employed where necessary but never detract from the pure flavours of fresh produce.
With this in mind, expect dishes such as a saddle of lamb paired with wild mushrooms and cauliflower sitting comfortably alongside a dessert that will no doubt become a King signature: the nitro pavolva, a remake of the Aussie classic that features shaved pineapple, guava sorbet and basil seeds.
Like most new venues in Sydney with high-profile chefs, Gastro parK will undoubtedly be bombarded with foodie trendsters from the get-go. The crowds will be a deterrent, but this one is worth braving the throng for. In a town of conservative restaurants, it's rare to see an established chef pushing on, and well worth experiencing more than once.

A continually changing menu that's printed daily!
The head chef is definitely quirky + I can assure you that Gastro Park is where you will find the the most imaginative menu across this side of Sydney. The staff are lovely, the place is simple + smart and lets the food do the rest.
The Gastro Park Restaurant + Bar was awarded two chef hats by both the Gourmet Traveler and The Sydney Good Food Guide. After my experience I can definably understand why.

One of the best meals I've had in years
We booked at Gastro Park based on the ex Pier's chefs reputation and were not disappointed. Despite the off putting name it was the best night out in years. Food was absolutely spectacular with special mention to the liquid pumpkin gnocchi and the snapper. The service was friendly and the passion of the staff for this start up restaurant was tangible. They felt like a family. To top it all off the atmosphere was hugely fun as we sat at a window table watching the passing parade of Potts point revellers. Highly recommended. We will be going back for sure.
