El Loco

Another week another Merivale opening, helmed by Justin Hemmes' golden boy Dan Hong. Unlike his previous venue, Ms G's, which was inspired by David Chang after his visit to the 2010 Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, Hong's latest venture is a look at modern Mexican food interpreted with Korean sensibilities. The creative spark for El Loco comes courtesy of LA chef Roy Choi and his fleet of taco trucks, who coincidentally visited Down Under as part of the 2011 Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

As we've come to expect from Hong, he brings his own unique style to an established concept. The El (don't you dare say Toro) Loco menu features a range of tacos - a pork al pastor, lemongrass beef, prawn, chicken and tofu - as well as a couple of sandwiches (tortas) and quite possibly the best hot dog in town.

Tucked into a corner of Merivale's latest acquisition, the Excelsior Hotel, this incarnation of El Loco is a temporary "pop-up" before construction begins on the real deal, but judging by its immediate popularity, El Loco 2.0 will only get bigger and better. We wait with bated breath to see what Dan Hong turns his Midas touch to next.
