Crowded, convivial and cosmopolitan, Degraves is a pleasant place to while away a morning over coffee and the newspapers or linger over lunch with friends. This groovy espresso bar attracts an eclectic crowd who are all buzzing (no wonder, really, when they're here for the excellent coffee). There's a Parisian edge to the cafe, enhanced by the art deco interior. The menu runs the gamut from panini to house-made desserts such as fresh muffins. Soups are always good value and often vegetarian.

Not what is used to be
I hadn't been for a couple of years, the paninis used to be tasty, lush lunch dishes. This one had a very meagre filling. My friend had the frittata, which took 15 minutes to arrive but was tasty. However, the music was so loud for people trying to talk with friends over lunch. The place looks groovy and funky but the staff seem self-indulgent, the music was for them, they seemed to have little interest in customers, and the panini for $10 had one and half slices of tomatoes, 3 little bits of cheese and some basil leaves. I won't be going back there. Very sad, used to love the place.

Disappointed
We ordered 3 tapas dishes: chicken tenderloins on chickpeas, patatas bravas, and the lamb skewers. Seriously, they tasted like something I would make myself and I'm a terrible cook. The chicken came with canned chickpeas and was a bit dry, not interesting at all. The patatas bravas consisted of stale bits of potato with what tasted like Dolmio sauce poured on top, and for $9.90 the lamb was just 2 tiny skewers on bits of bread. Atmosphere and location are great, but what does that count for if the food is terrible. Disappointed.

Unimpressed
Note of warning--you are expected to decide what you're ordering before you enter the restaurant using the boards at front door. There are no menus, and only a few scribbled chalkboards on the wall that I watched people comically straining to see directly over their heads. Not like the servers were planning to help, either--all were either frowning and unfriendly or had completely blank expressions as they trudged around the restaurant. My risotto (cheesy with chorizo and capsicum) was lackluster and topped with DRIED thyme--I'm no Gordon Ramsay but I'm pretty sure that's a no-no. The decor was casual and funky--some old theater seats and school tables--and the music fun, upbeat jazz. The cappuccino I had was good, but not spectacular as I'd been led to believe. The price for the meal at least was very reasonable--$16 for risotto and $9.50 for a Coopers and cappuccino together. I would also go back to try out their tapas menu, which looked pretty good.

Disappointing experience
In a city well known and respected for its culinary experience this was disappointing. The service was, in a word, woeful. The food was average at best, bordering on uninspired, boring and tasteless. I was was lucky, however, as one of our group did not even receive their meal. They were, of course, charged for the phantom dish.
