Cookie

Self-described as a disco, eating house and beer hall, Cookie manages to walk the fine line between the three and be all things to all people.

Venturing to Cookie after five o'clock, you will be greeted at the top of the bluestone staircase by a sea of business suits and bustling nightlife as the corporate crowd slowly but surely make their way through the 85-plus imported beers available. However, in between the corporate lunches and after work drinks you will find a quirky little venue that manages to do justice to the fantastic Thai fusion food that head chef Karen Batson creates in her more mainstream kitchen. It's not the jaunty, tapas-style Thai you're likely to see from Batson's other projects (Colonel Tan's and The Toff in Town) but one taste of the deep-fried marinated pork ribs or the dry red curry with seafood and all complaints will cease.

A bit diappointed with the cold service
Food was quite good but not generous serving. Wish the service was a lot friendlier and less indifferent.

Crap service
We went here for lunch on a Sat. We had a great seat on a balcony, in the sun. It wasnt busy as it was around 3. We were waiting 20 minutes to get served. Finally, we had to go and get the waiter. Then we ordered, and the prices are quite high for a casual lunch. Then we started getting the smoke from a couple on the next balcony. At this point, I could see where this was going. We cancelled and left. It could have been great food, but I will never know as I have 0 intention of returning. I think you can often get the worst service in a restaurant when it is quiet. This is the time when waiters should be aware of what they are doing.

Higly NOT recommended
The food was very disappointing. The mains were quite small. The service not just indifferent, but actually quite rude and for this I'm not even going to give a rating. The seating was too crowded and we kept on getting bumped by each other, fellow diners and the waiter. The room was just too crowded and noisy, the food and the rude waiters made it a very forgettable night. Will definitely not be going back and recommending others not to go.

Disgusting service! Doesn't deserve a rating!
I just rang up Cookie to make a reservation. After I told the gentleman on the other end that I wanted a table for 4 on Friday, he proceed to say nothing. After about 2 minutes I kept saying 'hello' until he eventually responded. When I asked why he wasn t acknowledging me, he said he had to go upstairs as he had other things to do in a very annoyed tone. What the?!! That was without a doubt the worst customer service I've ever received. I ended up hanging up how dare he

Pander to the Suit
Late lunch - 2.30pm at Cookie. We were seated and much, much, much later we were asked for our order (we gave food and drink order at the same time because we had plenty of time to decide). Meanwhile I noticed that men in suits seated after us received drinks and food before we had ordered. After receiving our food and drink, at the same time, we were never approached again. We even had to wait around to get the bill, in fact we had to leave our table and find someone to ask. Appalling service and very average food. Perhaps resting on their laurels and simply "working for the man". I don't recommend Cookie to anyone.

Very tasty food
2 of us went to Cookie for Lunch mid-week. We found the service to be very attentive and helpful. We had great fun trying a few of the many beers available. The Wine List is good too. The food was delicious, full of flavour that I just can't seem to replicate when I cook Thai at home.(especially the Deep Fried Pork Belly in Red Curry Sauce.YUM.)I love the way they present the bill.(

Rude and bad service, yum food
Like others I found Cookie's food to be great but the service terrible. We had to wait one hour for menus! There were 9 of us there waiting on 2 more people but it seemed they weren't going to give us food menus until everyone got there. When I asked a nearby waitress for some menus she replied that she wasn't our waitress and ours was busy but she'd bring some over soon. 5 minutes later when I looked up our waitress was there polishing cutlery so I went and asked for some.

We had to wait ages for any drinks and a couple of times they never came.

When some of my friends that I hadn't booked for dinner but they were going to join us for drinks afterwards in the bar area arrived at 9:30 and we were only just getting the food (been there since 7:30) the waitress said if they could find seats that was fine otherwise if they blocked the aisle we would be "kicked out". I have never been told I was going to be kicked out of a restaurant before!!

The staff have attitude problems I think stemming from the fact Cookie is also a bar so they think they can treat paying dinner customers like some drunk people at a bar! One thing to be said though is that they are probably understaffed.

I would never go back to Cookie.

Rude service
My mum had booked me a table at Cookie for my 17th birthday for me and 6 other girls, I had also checked on the website to look at the menu and location of the place. When we arrived we took our seat and a waiter came up asking for our id's, since we were 17 we didn't have any, she told us we had to be over 18 to eat here and that we would have to leave. We did not order any alcohol and were not planning on it either, the waitress was very rude towards us and we were not warned that you had to be over 18 it does not say on their website or when we called to book. I thought it was disgraceful that they wouldn't warn us because we were left on the streets with nowhere to eat and had to wait for an hour to get picked up. My birthday dinner was wrecked by such a rude waiter.

Smokers get best seats in the house
My husband and I and a couple of friends visited Cookie on Saturday night for an early dinner, I had been before and really enjoyed it. I hadn't been able to book a table because I was told it was fully booked when I rang. However, when we got there, a helpful waiter told us we could have a table from 6 till 7.30pm, which was great. We noticed that there was a very strong smell of smoke in the restaurant and saw that this was because tables of smokers were sitting in the window balconies and their smoke was blowing straight into the room. It was a lovely evening and those tables were certainly the pick of the restaurant. Food was terrific, the menu is extensive and interesting, service was prompt, entertaining and pleasant and prices were very reasonable. The air quality was the only negative in an otherwise enjoyable experience.

My boyfriend and I booked a table for two at Cookie for our anniversary, rocked up at 7pm when our booking was made for and were told we would have to have some drinks at the bar until a table became available. After 10 minutes we were seated, only to fight for eye contact with the waiters after waiting 15 minutes for them to take our order.

I chose the mussel cake with green papaya salad and my man chose the two way barramundi. The waiter had not mentioned that the meals we ordered were spicy and nor did the menu make any mention either.

Overall a disappointing experience.

Love this place
I am a huge fan of Cookie. The service might not be the best (my bf waited for 15 min before being served a drink at the bar on a Thursday), but the food is fantastic!
The pork belly with chilli is phenomenal, and the penang curry with coconut rice is too good for words.
In the summer, drinks and snacks on the juliet balcony is lovely, especially as you watch the people go past.
I can't get enough of this place. Cookie is a winner!

The Cookie crumbles
Having heard so much about the place, 7 of my friends and I went out for dinner. When booking for a 7.30 dinner, we were told that we had to be out of there by 9pm, which was fine since we had a show to catch at 9.30pm. We arrived a little before 7.30 and we were told that the table was being readied. Off we went to the bar and waited and waited and waited. We had to chase up our table twice and we managed to get seated at 8pm. After that, it was mayhem. We needed to be out of there by 9.30 but the service was slow and the server seemed very confused. Three people did not get their food until 9.15 by which time it was getting too late. Food did not come at the same time, there were food missing, it was chaos!

All in all, not a good night at all. Pity as the food was not bad at all but eating out is not just about food, it's the whole experience. And sadly, the Cookie crumbled.

We had a table organised for 6 but had a long wait, probably a ploy to get us to the bar - it worked, we ordered a bottle of Verge and weren't impressed that we were expected to pour it ourselves. We ended up with 8 for dinner which we thought would be fine considering the couch seating, casual atmosphere, we were pretty much yelled at and ordered out when we tried to. Service continued to be poor and aggressive. I ordered a late harvest wine which caused confusion to the staff, after waiting 20 mins I complained to someone else who brought a glass out, 10 mins later the first staff member showed up with a Pinot Gris asking 'is this it?'.
A vegetarian guest at our table was highly disappointed at their inflexibilty to alter any of the dishes to meet her dietary requirements as apparently all the meals are pre-made???
The meals came out sporadically. Some of our guests had finished their meals before others had even received them. Mine and a friend's never came out at all!!! What I did try off sympathic donations from other plates was very salty.

Go for lunch
I've been a big fan of Cookie since its early days and its food and service has always been consistently good and have always enjoyed sunny lunches in the restaurant with a few beers. Took the girlfriend out for dinner a few weeks back after two failed attempts at booking a table (they rarely answer their phone) and ended up waiting a good 45 minutes for our 8.30 booking. Apart from that, it offers an exceptional night, or afternoon, out. Get the chilli beef stir fry.

So cheap and so tasty!
Having heard good things of Cookie, on a recent visit to Melbourne town, I had to make a stop. The place is buzzing with young hot things and the decor is just out of Soho London. I really like how the place is set up with different rooms and it definitely helps with the sound, the volume is permanently high!

Can't really comment on service because I ate in the bar section where there is no table service. The food! Cookie is one of the tastiest meals I have had for the price, I almost couldn t believe it when I read the bill. For $35 a person, which included a very nice glass of pinot from Tasmania, we had three tapas plates of cabbage rolls with shitake mushrooms and bean curd; sweet potato and eggplant with coconut and kaffir lime; and squid stuffed with mince pork, lime leaf and hot and sour sauce - and boy was I stuffed! Loved Cookie, when I'm back in Melbourne, I'll be back!

Great food and huge choice of drinks!
Booked six girls in for a hen's night on a Friday night. Usually full of the after-work crowd, this Friday was a public holiday so the atmosphere was a lot more relaxed and less frenzied. The girls were delighted with the food and equally happy with the choice and presentation of cocktails. Service was excellent except for the cocktails which took up to 20 minutes to make each time!
