Cafe Vue

Cafe Vue at 401 St Kilda Road is now open for business; lovers of renowned chef Shannon Bennett can now sample a taste of the fare that has made his city restaurants so famous. A rather large yet welcoming space, this incarnation of Cafe Vue has already garnered a popular following from ... wait for it ... local Melbourne Grammar School pupils who have shunned their canteen in favour of Bennett's latest venture.

Pulling shots from morning to night, the cafe transforms into a chic, Parisian-style bistro in the evening. Diners are invited to sip on a cocktail, salivate over steak-frites with bearnaise, or perhaps munch on a few macaroons - the ultimate sweet ending to an already delightful dining experience.

More of the same........
Went here for breakfast with a friend this morning and left disappointed and unimpressed ( wouldn't go back ). Agree with the previous reviews the staff seem busy being frantic and it feels slightly chaotic and disorganised. The coffee was good but again the corn cakes were horrible - dry and overcooked and overly salted ?
Am not sure if the ' Vue ' and become a franchise but as a massive fan of both ' de monde' and ' bistro ' I'm staying well away from the cafe series.

Service is shambolic and pretentious
I went for dinner with a friend. The tile floors and walls mean that it is quite noisy when full. The ambience is not cosy at all - I find it quite a cold place to be, certainly not somewhere I would want to linger.

The food was reasonably good. However, the wait staff are completely disorganised. We got delivered the wrong food. Then we were overcharged for a bottle of water that we never ordered or had heard of.

The wait staff were pretentious and really pretty obnoxious. I would not go back.

A mixed bag ...
Hmmm, went here with high hopes, as my eating companion had raved about the food, and the coffee is delicious. Five different waiters were very attentive and friendly in their own way, but the net result was chaotic and inefficient - too much attention and not enough real service. The restaurant was not full, so they had to look busy. We had to ask for our food twice, and when the tuna toast with fries finally arrived after 40 minutes, it was really only one step above what you could do with your own toaster and a tin of tuna. At $15 a serve, I recommend the latter! The miniature pies, however, were delicious, especially the lentil and lamb one. I would like to see some green leaves offered somewhere in the snack menu, or is the overload of carbs and fried fare the true French way? Perhaps we caught them between shifts, but given what else is available in this area, they need to be careful not to be complacent.

Mixed bag
Our waiter was wonderful but the food did take a while to come out.
The atmosphere is casual but busy and the decor is interesting.

The corn cakes were horrible - they had this plastic-like skin and just weren't tasty. My friend ordered the 62C eggs but found that the bread beneath was cold and the eggs barely warm.
Our friend who ordered the yoghurt with fruit said it was lovely, but practically identical to how she makes it at home.
I ordered a Chicken Truffle pie to take home so I am hoping that will be lovely. I wouldn't go back for breakfast, but I'd be willing to give their lunch a go.
