Cafe Vue

The ever-so-luxe Vue de Monde, that fine-dining darling of the Melbourne restaurant scene, has sprouted an informal sibling, Cafe Vue. In conjunction with Illy coffee suppliers, the cafe provides a pocket-friendly alternative to the fancy-pants original - a welcome option for those of us whose pants are not quite so fancy, or who would like their fix of Vue more often.

The menu is wonderfully diverse. Brekkies include bircher muesli or French toast with spiced roasted apple, sandwiches feature such French/Aussie options as a baked bean and duck confit jaffle, while sweets range from a coffee creme brulee to a nanna-chic lamington. Warming lunches might include a pumpkin bouillabaisse or an English-style pork pie, washed down with the house-made verbena lemonade or a perhaps a glass (or a carafe) of Italian wine.

Although this is mostly a breakfast and lunch affair, the space is available for cocktail soirees on Thursday and Friday evenings, when guest mixologists will concoct boozy creations to match a selection of chef Shannon Bennett's cuisine.

Long wait for service. Long wait for food.
We went for lunch with a group of 8 as a farewell.

We got to the cafe and it did take 5 minutes to sit us down as we were a larger than average group for a cafe. We were advised that unusually for this particular day the food service was delayed by 15-20 mins but if we were to put our orders in quickly, we would get the food quicker. easy right?

So, anyway, it took 8 of us 2 minutes to browse the lunch menu (which doesn't have a massive variety for lunch, that's ok) and then awaited to catch the eye of a waiter to take our order... That process took 15 minutes in itself!!!!! so much for putting orders in quick.

The food then took 40 mins to arrive... not quite close to the original 15-20 quoted!

Lastly, my colleague was saying that the acoustics were as such that it was hard to hear conversations.

Conclusion - If you've got any more than 4 people don't bother. If you're there for a quick lunch, don't bother. The food was ok, the atmosphere was ok, but not a lot to be said about the service.

Cafe Vue review
What a disappointment, after all the hype about Shannon Bennett's bistro and restaurant, neither of which I have tried. I ventured into Cafe Vue for the first time yesterday. It will be my last time.

At $7, the onion soup was a total rip-off: insipid, watery, tepid and completely uninteresting. Onion soup, properly made, should invigorate. This one tended to bore me to sleep. The chocolate tart was OK - the crust was bland, though the filling was fine. The tables are far too tiny to be comfortable (hyper-vigilance is required lest an item go crashing to the floor) and one shudders to seat one's posterior on what looked like overblown wine corks.

Number one gripe: plastic cutlery!

Get takeaway and try a picnic instead!
To previous reviewers who are unsure about the price for eating out of a box or the service at the place, try buying the lunch box for take away! My partner did exactly that - meeting me at Fawkner park during lunch break armed with 2 boxes from Cafe Vue, a bottle of wine, 2 Asahi's and a picnic rug!

The food was brilliant (especially put together for us even though Cafe Vue was closed for the Christmas-NY's break (now that's service)). Lucky we had a picnic blanket under a shady tree to recline on after we indulged in the very rich, filling food.

I would certainly pay a little extra to have this luxury aboard my next flight!

Service
Food was fabulous, baguettes to die for, coffee as good as one you would get in Italy.

Service - SHOCKING!

The staff were human - that's where it ends. Shocking attitude, uptight, rude, arrogant, and perhaps mute? Are they being paid peanuts or do they think they own the place therefore can treat their customers like crap?
Very very disappointing....the place has everything going for it, except the one main factor which makes people go back - CUSTOMER SERVICE!

Hmmm...

A neat package for a long flight
If only airlines served this kind of food. Unusual, and delicious combinations of fresh juice. Tasty dip with crunchy, olive oil-soused biscuits. Fresh salad with neatly balanced dressing. Soft, not overly sweet cupcake for dessert. All good stuff. Worthy of the Vue heritage. But packaged beyond belief. Each item, from the miniature sandwhich to the wooden knife and fork, individually wrapped.

Maybe that's why the lunch box weighed in at 15 dollars. I'd probably pay that much to have this quality on a longhaul flight. It would distract me from the boredom. But when I'm sitting in the centre of Melbourne I don't particularly want to feel like I'm half way across the Indian Ocean. So, I can't fault the food, but I'm just not sure about the box concept.
