Ca De Vin

Away from Bourke Street Mall, and the bustle of the trams to-ing and fro-ing, is Melbourne's newest food precinct. Built out of a laneway, this new little eat street welcomes you with majestic, gothic wrought-iron gates.

Ca De Vin has stripped away the fluff surrounding Aussie styles of Italian cuisine; you won't see pizzas with mountains of topping, nor mega plates of carbonara. The extensive menu provides a wordy treat for avid readers, though the specials on the large blackboard more concisely list the day's fare.

If you're just a little peckish you might try a rosemary baguette or a walnut loaf, or else step up to a mezze plate, a pizza or some fresh local mussels. Big appetites can still get their carb hit with a plate of penne, spaghetti or risotto. If you're not hungry at all, grab yourself an espresso and sit at the tall bar with a newspaper and enjoy the age and grandiosity of Melbourne.

What a disappointment
We live in Sydney and keep hearing about the superlative Melbourne Italian food, but wanted a restaurant downtown to be close to our hotel as we have a 10 year old child. This restaurant had been well rated in reviews we read. The venue was great, in an alleyway behind the GPO with gas heaters and covers against the rain. The waiters were pleasant, but apparently inept. We did not get our entrees and the warm vegetables were brought out 15 minutes before the mains. The mains were very average. Not worthy of a greasy spoon. Overall it was disappointing and not a patch on Leichhardt. Don't bother- stay at home.

Disappointing
We had been past this place many times as we are always in the city and on this occasion we thought we would drop in for dinner. We had the rack of lamb which was served with ravioli and cooked perfectly and the prawn and leek ravioli which was served with a citrus bisque. What I found really disappointing was the tiny portion size of the ravioli and at $26 for four pieces, it felt like a rip off. I can't say that I would recommend this in future.

Be charmed
I had been meaning to come here for a long time, having walked past intrigued many times. What a pleasure it was to have that expectation met and surpassed. We decided to go with a bit of spread, starting, of course, with a bottle of wine. A very reasonably priced '03 coonawarra shiraz that was perfect for a chilly Melbourne winter day. Next up was the cheese, a terrific French brie served with fresh vienna loaf, a delightful crisp bread and accompanied with raisons and pear, a great way to start. We then had a generous bowl of mussels in a sour cream, lemon and paprika broth (and unmentioned but welcome fresh chilis). We also had the Middle Eastern sausages that were a little disappointing when compared to the rest of the experience. The service was great, very informal yet never amatuerish, nothing worse than stuffy wait staff! All in all I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back again.
