Every so often a new venue opens in a part of town and it single-handedly changes the dining landscape there. This cafe is one of those places.
As coffee goes, you can't really get a better pedigree than Axil's. Owners Dave Makin and Zoe Delany could fill their cavernous new cafe solely with their coffee accolades and trophies, but instead the pair has decided to stow the trophies and opt for an industrial chic decor with communal tables and two brand-new, triple-headed La Marzocco espresso machines hissing happily in the corner.
As you'd expect from a pair of barista champions, coffee is king at Axil, so it's no disrespect to say that food plays second fiddle. Having said that, the food on offer here is still some of the best you'll find in Hawthorn. Often times specialty roasters are content to offer cafe standards and focus solely on coffee; Axil aims to extend itself in all facets, delivering a menu that would warrant the swarming crowds even if the coffee were terrible. Expect quality eats like baked eggs and haloumi corn fritters or a gourmet wrap with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, tabouli, yoghurt and fresh mint.
