Ants Bistro isn't nearly as small as the name suggests, though the press of customers on a busy night might initially give that impression. With a menu of standard Chinese cuisine and very reasonable prices, there is a nice steady flow of customers brushing against the warm red walls. Don't be surprised if there's a little bit of a wait for your meal - just take the time to admire the clustered collection of Chinese lanterns hanging above you.

A lot of dishes make a nice meal
We went with about 6 people and each of us ordered a dish (incl the Imperial Chicken, which the menu said to be 'very exciting') and a bowl of rice. Delicious meals! Plus it's very near bars, which makes it a perfect started to get a stomach lining before hitting the drinks. Was a bit devastated that I didn't find a dish called "Ants in the Pants" though :)

Cheap & Cheerful but Addictive
I've been going to ANTS Bistro for about 3 years, mainly for lunch & in a group of about 5-6. Take along a couple of bottles of sauv blanc or pinot noir and go nuts with the cheerful north China tucker. Portions are generous, food is tasty and service is fine. And the Wunan Pork Spare Ribs are so damn addictive that the authorities may develop an interest in the ingredients. I've seen my friends consume several orders of this generous dish. When Matt Preston reviewed this place he was somewhat lukewarm, but for me that just enhances the reputation of the restaurant. Go there & enjoy.

Keep coming back
Ants Bistro is somewhere I just keep coming back to, probably through the whining of my work colleagues whom I introduced previously. The food is just fantastic, with terrific use of special herbs and spices and on obvious northern Chinese influence.
An absolute spectacular dish is the Wunan Pork Spare Ribs. Scrambled Egg Whites are also a favourite and the entree chilli calamari is also very tasty. Service is pretty good, but can get slow when packed out. The pricing is quite cheap too compared to similar style restaurants, so its great value and definately my favourite Chinese restaurant in Melbourne.

Group dinner
Went for dinner with about 13 people and the restaurant was a full house, but surprisingly the meals did not take too long to come out. The food was quite nice, had mostly seafood and vegetarian dishes and they were satisfactory, not oily and apart from the fish, the meals were fresh. A good place to go with a group since the meals are large and good to share. The prices are very reasonable, with 13 people eating (plus corkage) coming to approximately $170. All in all a good place to share a meal with friends.

No frills Chinese food above and beyond!
I adore Ants Bistro and always find myself going there when the call for Asian food is strong (and when I want something a little more substantial than just dumplings). The food is fantastic - don't be confused by the odd English on the menu. I highly recommend the the garlic chicken dish and the "tender of beef" - fantastically soft pieces of beef (how they do it I will never know) in a spicy chilli sauce. It really is no frills but the prices are right and I always leave there with a full belly and a big smile on my face!
